In partnership with UCSF’s Center for Vulnerable Populations, Youth Radio’s Health & Wellness Department Interns went on a photo walking tour around downtown Oakland to answer the question: Where is health happening in our community?

This past weekend I attended a local conference, Generation Waking Up Leadership Training, hosted by United Roots Oakland. The conference was rich with information and innovative ideas on how the participants can apply our dreams to transforming our world to be more sustainable. We focused on topics such as social justice, healthy living, social entrepreneurship, creative problem-solving, effective planning and more. After attending this conference, my future goals are much more clearer, I have developed a better understanding of my gifts, and I have a stronger support system. The different gifts I have to offer that wasn't as clear as they are now are:

The happiest moment in a women, men, and family life is being pregnant and knowing the fact that you're about to be a mother. One thing about being pregnant is that you have to maintain a proper healthy body and eat right so the baby can be healthy and strong.

Love is something that you cannot see. It is something you feel, but not physically. It’s really an emotion.
Love is really when you are past liking something or someone. It is a higher level of a relationship. When you are really in love you like the person for who they are and you are able to compromise with them. Also you feel good when you are with them; basically, you want to spend time with them because you feel good in their company.

On Tuesday, Caroline Miller, along with Youth Radio and other Youth Relationship Alliance partners, proclaimed February as Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. The proclamation took place at the Alameda County Board of Supervisors meeting. Though the meeting was relatively small, the events that took place were monumental for teens and adults.

It’s sad to say not all friendships last forever, and forever doesn't last at all. But what I will say is that friendships can teach you a lot about yourself and help you figure out what you want and need out of life. Judging from my last 3 years in High school, my past experiences with “friends” has been completely jacked up! Most of the people I considered a friend wasn't really acting like one. Then again, everyone’s definition of a friend is not always the same.

I’ve been in a relationship for almost three years, but earlier this year it ended, and I’m still hurt. I try to play it off and say things like, “I’m okay,” “I don’t need him,” and “I’ma make it.” And I AM gonna make it but I’m not okay; I’m so heart broken.

Being a father comes with lots of responsibilities. But most fathers don’t have what it takes to be a good one. Some blame it on their own fathers not being in their lives but that never makes it okay for a man to abandon his child. A lot of kids grow up fatherless and more often than not begin to look up to the men in their neighborhood who are selling drugs, involved in gang activities, or have a negative impact on their community in any way. But why do they look up to them? In my opinion it is because of the media taking things such as guns, cars, chains, women, and drugs and making them “cool.” Some kids buy into it, while others choose a more positive road to success.
There are many types of medicine. One type of medicine is frequently used to help increase wellness is called holistic medicine. Holistic medicine is a type of treatment that focuses on how the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual elements of the body are interconnected to maintain wellness. Instead of treating the injured part of the body, Holistic medicine includes physical and mental therapy.

There are a lot of different aspects to a relationship and key things are needed to make a healthy one. Most people want a loving relationship to feel loved so they can give it back.
However, just like life... relationships are COMPLICATED and there are things people don't always take into consideration. In my opinion, there are 4 main things that are need in a relationship which are: communication, balance, commitment and trust. I believe when any one of these are missing it becomes a lot harder to have the solid, good, healthy relationship you are looking for.
