Remembering Yeardly Love & Pushing The Message Of Healthy Relationships
Yeardly Love was a young woman who attended the University of Virginia. She played lacrosse for the UVA and was known as a sweet girl. On Monday May 3, 2010 Love’s apartment door was found kicked open and her body was found face down on her bed around a pool full of blood. Physical trauma to her body indicated her death was a homicide. Her previous boyfriend, George Huguely, also a lacrosse team member and student of the UVA, was arrested for the murder of Love. Later, Huguely admits to slamming her head against a wall.
The UVA lacrosse team was planning on playing in the NCAA Tournament this year. Even though one team member just passed and another team member is in jail for the death, their couch decided that the team will still attend the tournament. Love’s family wishes the team the best of luck.
Lately I’ve been hearing and seeing a lot of violence among young couples and I’m trying to figure out why so many more people are starting to think that it’s ok to be with an abusive person or to be an abusive person. After working with BOM411 and participating in outreach events at Bay Area high schools, I’ve been able to talk to many young teens. Only about 5% of the young teens I asked could tell me what the five different types of abuse were. About 30% of the teens I talked to could tell me three things that contribute to a healthy relationship but barely any teens could give me an example of what an abusive relationship was, besides physical abuse.
Abusive relationships usually start off with verbal and emotional abuse. From there, the abuse usually turns physical, sexual or financial. Sometimes it can end in all five of the types of abuse. Getting someone out of an abusive relationship is difficult. Although it’s difficult, it’s important to try to help and make sure your helping in the correct way. Sadly, it was too late for Yeardly Love.
