Chat Roulette’s Popularity Continues To Rise
Pressing the start button on the now infamous site of chatroulette.com is both exciting and nerve wracking as the player of the so called "video chat game" site (hence the name chatroulette) knows that they could be confronted with anyone ranging from a funny man with cat in hand, a woman playing piano, to a nude creep.
The site was launched in November 2009 by a 17 years old Russian boy, Andrey Ternovskiy. The young man was inspired by skype video chats and created the site not expecting much.
Andrey Ternovskiy said “I created this project for fun. Initially, I had no business goals with it. I created this project recently.” “I was and still am a teenager myself, that is why I had a certain feeling of what other teenagers would want to see on the Internet.”
Very quickly word spread about the fun, boredom busting site and today around 1.5 million people (& sometimes cats http://catroulette.tumblr.com/) use the site.
For all, but especially teenagers, the website is a wonderful chance to interact with people around the world. Many speak different languages and it can be a fun task trying to undertsand one another. Often times laughter links people who otherwise can't communicate. Some go on the site dressed up in costumes, some read poems aloud, and still others play music or simply want to "chat" it up. A user to the site may even be confronted with a celebrity! Many teenage celebrities engage in the site, a few people at my school claimed they met the Jonas Brothers.
At times, the site can be a bit disturbing. Sick-minded people may utilize the site to display their genitalia or ask you to flash yours. To some who have witnessed too many inappropriate instances, the site may become more of a live porn hub. For others, the easy access next button is a great option to avoid gross or awkward confrontations.
In the end it seems that most are drawn to the site when they are bored and are just looking for conversation. It is cool to practice French with people actually from France or share experiences about your time in Maui with the woman from Maui. It is a fun activity and creates laughs with friends and strangers.
