Being my own role model was a step I had to make in order for me to be successful in life. Not just in life, but as a person, father, son, brother etc. Growing up in Oakland isn’t hard, but it’s not easy either, you can say it’s more of a balanced rating overall. It has wonderful places and programs for youth, homeless shelters and other things. Yet, it downs in the ranks with its history of violence and crime. For some people, the violence might be too much to handle and it starts to becomes normal!

Not just in life, but as a person, father, son, brother etc. Growing up in Oakland isn’t hard, but it’s not easy either, you can say it’s more of a balanced rating overall. It has wonderful places and programs for youth, homeless shelters and other things. Yet, it downs in the ranks with its history of violence and crime. For some people, the violence might be too much to handle and it starts to becomes normal!
Growing up in Oakland isn’t successfully done by many youths now and days. Most either end up in jail or dead at a young age. My opinion is they don’t have enough positive influences like the lack of good parenting. Even those with good parents and positive role models still get influenced by the wrong crowd of people.
Some youths use their struggle to motivate them to get out of what they came from, to never return and live a better lifestyle then they had as a child. Then when they have children of their own, their children won’t have to go through what they went through as a youth.
What might be hard for some people here is that the city is high populated with drug dealers and drug users. I had my share of run ins with trouble, because Oakland plays a big role in my life. Depending on your lifestyle whether you have healthy or unhealthy relationships will be the key to your success in life.
Growing up in a city like Oakland you have to “keep your feet moving and head up” is a saying I like to use. You have to keep your head up to show your strong and keep your feet moving on the road to success. See it not easy as it sounds, you also have to have a plan on what your going to do and when your going to do it; also you have to set reachable goals and achieve them one by one.
